This is a very easy excursion whose aim is to visit the water systems of Ses Vergunyes with its irrigation channels and mills, a legacy of the inhabitants who lived in the fields of Yartan, which is what Artà is thought to have been called before the conquest of Jaume I.
Ses Vergunyes was much-admired by travellers in the 19th century but has since disappeared from the usual itineraries. It was described as an arable area located two kilometres from the town of Artà, a paradise thanks to its crops and the plentiful water that came from the stream of Es Molinet. Three flour mills can be seen during this excursion, which were used to help irrigate the fields of arable crops but are now in varying states of disrepair: the Molí de Dalt, the Molí d’en Terrassa and the Molinet.
This area's water system is fed from Sa Vergunya spring, an abundant water source very close to the surface so that, once the stream had been prepared and paved, it could be used as an irrigation channel in the initial stage, up to the reservoir of the first mill. From this point on, an irrigation channel was built that splits off from the stream.
This route has been taken from the collection of excursions prepared and published by the hiking group "Un raig d’Artanencs".
