Morell

This possessió is on the road that joins Artà with Alcudia, on a small hill under Ferrutx mountain. Its origins go back to the Muslim period as in the present location there was an old Islamic farmhouse from which no architectonic rests are preserved, although part of its medieval defensive structure from the 14th century can be intuited. The same building Archiduc Lluis Salvador describes during the 19th century, when it was property of the Marquis of Bellpuig and it was dedicated to the cultivation of vineyard and fruit trees, highlighting its majesty. Nowadays, it is a true manor house with a house for the farmer and another one for the lord. Access is made through a large exterior portal in the middle of an enclosing wall. The whole complex is organized around a quadrangular courtyard and is of two storeys due to the unevenness of the land. The top floor, of larger dimensions, is joined with the ground floor through a stone ramp. The main floor, with access from the courtyard, preserves a fresco decoration with floral, vegetal and mythological motifs ornamenting walls and roofs. Behind the main facade we find the house of the farm tenants and beside that a series of farm premises like the oil mill, the stables, the storehouse, etc. Immediately after this house we find the portal of the chapel. It has a lintel entrance with door jambs of Mallorcan sandstone finished with moulded capitals that give way to an entablature crowned with a wheel window. The roof is a ribbed vault with its wall ribs joined by decorated keystones. In the proximities of the houses of Morell an interesting and complex water network is found. It supplies the same possessió, the water mill and the place known as s'Hort de s'Estacada with water. Part of the network takes the water from a fountain located next to the torrent, from where a canal goes to the reservoirs at the back of the houses. In a stretch of the canal there is an impressive seven meters high aqueduct supported by a round arch. There are three fountains that supply with water a series of agricultural terraces --Mallorcan bancals-- thanks to a small reservoir. These are located next to the first mentioned fountain. Finally, in the torrent there is an old dam that supplied the old water mill.
